close up of Vincent painting

Close up of this technique.  This was more like drawing with semi-hard pastels over the intense watercolor underpainting.

Vinny finished

Finished painting. 14X11" on sanded board.

  1.  This is the start for a painting of my cat Vincent.  It is brilliant watercolor all over, then when dry, I sketched in the image. This is the reference photo.

Pastel 3-4-2017

This is the last try.  The white was fun...no pure white, all tints.  This was on 400 grit paper, with an alcohol wash in the drawing process.  It is always interesting to try someone else's technique as it expands the choices available.

My first try with Stephanie's technique.  I liked the loose background and the work of painting with first and secondary colors into tints and shades.

These are the three warm up exercises we did in the Stephanie Birdsall workshop. March 2017

Terry's Girls

This is from photos taken this summer in Oregon, where we visited Janet and Terry with their two grey kitties, Bruzer and Bella. This is Bella, the lovely.

Black paper challenge

I attended the Liz Haywood-Sullivan workshop this past week-end. She had us do a painting on Black Canson paper, and then the second day we did the same reference landscape on white sanded paper with an under wash.

This is the result of the first day. Very quick work and rather unfinished looking, but you can see the drama of the dark paper showing thru.

I will show the next one tomorrow.

"Watching"

This bobcat was in a Tucson Zoo that we visited last year. She was watching from up high on a ledge as the sun was starting to go down. I thought she was lovely.

what is she thinking?

This is not a daily painting...it took more like 3 weeks and I am not sure if I am finished. It is pastel on Wallis paper.
I look the reference photo of this little East Indian girl in Chicago this year. She was very serious and direct in her stare. I have another view I may try also.
I often do more than one pose or more that one painting of the same pose for a portrait. I don't try to get it the first time, and that helps the pressure of getting a likeness.

white pitcher

This one was on a 500 grit sandpaper I got at the last IAPS convention to try. It is a little course for my liking. I like the way the grapes turned out.
It is so good to be back in Austin for 10 days. This one was done in Stillwater. I brought my oils home with me and will continue with pastel up there.

Nectarines

I started out with the dark colors first. It is different than oil! Not too thrilled with this one, but for me to get anything on paper was a real big deal. Trying to do alittle art work each day is hard up here at my mother's.

Pastel: apple

It has been almost a month since I posted anything. I have been in Stillwater, Ok. taking care of my Dad until he died Sept.7th and then taking care of my Mom. I have missed painting so much!! I brought some pastels up and will try to do some studies while here.
This is an apple we had for dinner and I didn't have a single light source for it. I will try to get a better set up. It really makes a difference in having the basic requirements of painting.

Study of tomatos 5/24/09 8X10"

This one is done on blue canson paper. It was quick and fun

tomatos study 5/24/09 8X10"

This is a small pastel on green canson paper. I like the shadows and negative spaces as well as getting to use the rich reds and oranges.
